Fed: Time for a Ranger inquiry, say Senate parties

The Ranger uranium mine near Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory could besubject to a Senate inquiry within months -- amid a public outcry over its operations.

The federal opposition, Australian Democrats and Greens have all agreed to considersetting up an inquiry following serious allegations of environmental breaches at the mine.

The operator -- Energy Resources Australia -- says it will keep the mine going, evenafter one of its own scientists complained.

GEOFFREY KYLE says he tried to alert management to various matters and to take preventativemeasures -- to no avail.

Supervising Scientist ARTHUR JOHNSTON is investigating the mine's operations and hasalready told the government it should be subject to world standards.

Environment Minister DAVID KEMP has called for an urgent report but has rejected talkof a Senate inquiry as premature.
