WA: Last point for Aussie soldiers to feature in Anzac events
An Anzac Day dawn service will be held at the embarkation point where thousands of
Australian soldiers streamed into ships taking them to battle in World War I.
More than 30,000 personnel boarded 42 ships on November 1, 1915, from the southern
West Australian town of Albany, 410km south of Perth.
The convoy sailed from the town's port of Princess Royal to Alexandria in Eygpt, and
some of the soldiers would later land at Gallipoli and become Anzac veterans.
RSL Albany sub-branch president KAY CLEAK says a dawn service will be held at Mt Clarence,
overlooking the harbour, as part of the town's joint Anzac and Centenary of Federation
celebrations.
In Bunbury, 190km south of Perth, another commemoration will involve one of only three
surviving Gallipoli veterans, 106-year-old former British soldier PERCY GORING.
Mr GORING, who lives in Bunbury, is the last known British Gallipoli survivor.
